i'm heading down with a friend to crater lake in southern oregon and the redwoods in northern california. we were wondering if you all had any hints, tips and any other assorted recommendations about those areas (and anything else nearby... we'll be in a car, so we'll be able to get around easy enough...but might bring bikes too if there's any interesting paved trails [we don't have mountain bikes] to hit up)
p.s. - we might swing by shasta lake and arcata, ca too

i just got the most raddest & sweetest gift in the mail!! it's an "emo egg" from a craft fair on the east coast last week. a friend of mine from out of town got it for me while traveling. she kind of wound up as my pre-break-up rebound on her recent pass through portland a couple weeks back. go figure,eh? and it's totally perfect & appropriate right now. she actually called me last night, and even though it was frantic and on a completely unrelated matter, it was good hearing her voice.
speaking of last night...mikey & i went out to the mashtun for beer, free pool, and free jukebox tunes that never played. we met up with alex & paul, and we got to talking about all d&d characters and the possibility of reviving them. i don't know if it'll ever happen, but reefwood (ex-pirate half-orc barbarian with massive strength but not so bright) was definitely my favorite overall character to date, and roon (fighter/wizard gnome who rode a dog into battle and could jump 50 ft) was pretty fun as well. anyway, a&p left early, and i got a craving for chips & hummus, so we headed to the nest where blue and ankur met us. then megan showed up too. it was a good, fun night. although, i ran into this girl who i used to work with a couple years ago but confused her for this other girl's ex-housemate. that was a bit embarrassing, and i felt a bit bad, but it was all good.
also, i had a weird ass dream last night. i guess, it wasn't really weird ass given my current circumstances, but still. from what i remember...i was on a train or boat or some combination of the two. it was going down a wide city street in old-looking europe. the street may have been a river. the vehicle was definitely made up of several "train/boat cars" that were connected, and most of it had no roof. it was night time, but there was a good amount of people onboard, and wispy clouds swirled above. mikey was there and had been on this train/boat before. we weren't hanging out much onboard, but at some point, this random guy tried to mess with me, and mikey took care of him and commented on how that guy is always a jerk. the next thing i remember was running into kirsty in one of the covered "cars" that was more like an auditorium with seats on a steep slope and stage at the bottom. we were at some of the lower seats. it was kind of weird. the same kind of weird as running into her last weekend, but this time she offered me a glass of wine. we didn't really talk much, as far as i remember, and soon i had to pee. the bathroom was huge and had a few inches of water on the floor. it wasn't gross toilet water. i think it was just supposed to have water to keep the floor clean, but it got a little out of hand. when i came out of the bathroom, i have expected kirsty to be gone, but she was there and even offered me a seat next to her on a cushy bench. that's about the last thing i remember.

now that i'm almost halfway through my fourth december in portland, i can see that this month has had a bit of a theme for me since moving out here: hitting a quick high before getting tossed low...and sometimes the two aren't directly connected, even if they always fall into the same category as each other. it's kind of an interesting way to end the years. last year was definitely the most intense of these cycles. this time it's reminiscent of '04. an inevitable end. considerably bumpier than that one, but it shouldn't sting for too long. although, it'll probably be another one of those things that does hang around in the back of my mind to some degree for a good while. and so it goes...
at least new year's has always opened new paths since i've moved to portland too.

one of my favorite ladies helped put this together, and this year it's happening all weekend long, so you should stop by at some point! it's all going down around the corner of SW Ankeny at SW 2nd Ave downtown. here's the scoop:
Carfree Day will be a whole weekend long this year. We'll be turning this downtown street into a car-less plaza, and will be providing entertainment and education to everybody, for three days in a row.
Friday night will feature food and community. Saturday and Sunday during the day, we'll provide a mellow place to hang out on pillows and chairs and listen to acoustic music and sound experiments.
Saturday the 23rd will be the big night, featuring the 20 Foot Man (who is everything you could imagine) and other exciting, danceable local acts and musicians. Why not bring a cushion, your chess set, your potted plants, your lego set, and your rug, and plop down in the middle of the street with us to enjoy a few hours of lovely car-free-ness?
This weekend will give you the opportunity to drink free mocktails, eat free doughnuts, slurp free coffee, watch free projector films, and dance to free bands, and djs. You can bling your bike, tune up your bike for free too on the street. Pick up more Pdx bike maps than you ever felt you needed to own, and eat lots of yummy food from the food cart. Show up on Sunday with your own portable radio and a pillow, and join others doing the same as part of the Church of This American Life.
MUSICIANS - if you play in a band, and don't need too much electricity to do so, just show up anytime, and play for us! We'd love to have you all along to play in the streets for everybody. After all, it's your street. Do what you like in it, hooray!
Footnote: This weekend of doing it in the road will be the first step we wanna take in permanently shutting that segment of SW Ankeny to car traffic! Yeah!

how did last night end up so ridiculous? i'm not sure, and too bad i didn't get to hang out with the cute girl who's called i missed, but good times were certainly had.
now i have to go get my bike from the living room i left it in ten blocks away.

buffy the vampire slayer has been showing at the mission theater this summer. three episodes every monday. season two is just heating up with angel losing his soul last week and killing jenny this week. also, watching tv on the big screen gives me a good excuse to be in nw late and spend the night there. which has been lots of fun. on top of that, i wake up pretty close to trader joe's, so i pick up groceries on tuesday mornings before work. that's pretty sweet too.
this past weekend was the portland zine symposium. probably had the most fun and felt the most drained that i have in years at it. picked up more zines than in a few years, and it was rad seeing familiar faces both new to the event and back again. although, i forgot to get a table for myself. it was easy enough to do when i volunteered and organized my first couple years living out here, but working for microcosm on top of that for the past two years just makes me forget to get my own half-table too. i need to remember to do that next year. maybe i'll even have something new out for it. i wound up putting a couple of my older zines at the free table and traded some copies of the others away. a few people actually bought some from the impromtu space i set up at the empty half-table next to microcosm. i only have one copy left of the latest zine/issue, and i don't know if i'll bother making more copies of it.
the prom was pretty fun too. it wound up being way more work on my part and stress than i expected, but i was able to get a lot of rad help (especially from the parliament kids), and it seemed to turn out as well as it could despite just about every element of it falling apart at one point or another. silvan was passing through town that night and wound up as my sorta date while we ran off for a bit to get screwdrivers at the shanghai tunnel, i got an adorable photo with ami, cute michigan andie showed up for a while, and even though i was planning on hitting up a few fun spots afterwards, it was quite nice to just wind up back with kirsty at the night's end.
so yeah, it was a good weekend, and actually, i think my favorite part was seeing kristi when she stopped by on sunday. cos between her 2 schools and 3 jobs, i hadn't seen her in months. crazy. luckily, she's done for a good bit on wednesday. oh, and playing d&d after all the zining was pretty awesome too.

p.s. - i haven't checked my livejournal since last week, and it seems like a lot of people posted a lot. even moreso, i didn't check my work email over the weekend and wound up with 71 new messages, but luckily, 1/3 of those were spam. yep.

making pancakes without a spatula can be tricky. i used a plastic knife to try and get a similar effect, and it mostly sorta worked, but it also melted. i stuck with it, though, because i didn't want to scratch the pan with a metal knife (or other utensil). another thing...this is the first time i've made pancakes using a real egg in over a year...maybe two...and it kind of fucked with the consistency...and i'm getting used to using an electric stove again too...but they turned out alright.
one thing that i sometimes forget about portland is that there's stuff which goes on routinely here which would blow away my friends in michigan or the ones back east wouldn't expect to see in such a small city. one of those things is last thursday. now, it's not the most awesome thing ever by any means, but it is pretty neat, and i almost always have fun seeing what people are making and randomly running into familiar faces. so yeah, blue called me while i was showing sarah the space that would be good to use for the zinester prom, and i met up with her at don poncho's. i didn't have much of a plan for evening, but as the hours went on, our little group grew rather large...and it was rad to have my different friend groups interacting with each other and also meeting new folks they know...including two stephanies...one that looks familiar, but i don't know why....and the other who apparently knows me coming into liberty hall and microcosm, but i don't remember her at all either. oh, and i bought something too. it's only the second thing i've ever bought at last thursday, and it's the same thing i got last year...the adorable skeleton monkey! another thing to note is that everytime i meet up with emily s. on alberta, i tend to wind up drunkish. i guess it's cos by the time she gets off work, i've already had a couple drinks. and one more rad thing about the night was coming home to apple pie. i bought one at safeway the other day, but i'm going to try making a pie myself every week soon....i just gotta learn how to first.
so today looks to be another warm one. there were some scorchers over the weekend, so this isn't bad, and i'm pretty used to biking around sweaty by this point. got some errands to run such as groceries and finishing clearing out stuff from the old house and walking my old busted bike to bike works. maybe they can find some use for it. chris was talking about going to the river, but that's up in the air, and i don't know if i'll have time for it. but later, i may hang out with kirsty, and that should be fun....although, i have no idea what i'm doing this evening, but i like that.
p.s. - catan tomorrow at 11am!

i had a thought. or maybe it was more like a question. whatever it was, it was going to be a one-line post, but the starving in my gut has long since sucked it from my mind. now all i can think about is the burrito on my desk...so, i'm going to eat that first...
...it's amazing the difference that just a few bites can make...
...one of these days i'll get to updating about the past month and posting photos, but i'll just start with last night for now.
( i'll cut you! )
p.s. - i don't usually post from work, but today was the perfect day for it. not because i have lots of spare time...quite the opposite infact, as i'm behind on everything...but because a break from it was most in order.
